If no one has ever told you, let me be the first individual to tell you “Everyone has been depressed before.”

Depression is not the inevitable doorway to the ultimate mental health decline but, it is an indicator that something has transpired in your life snuffing your normal vibration away from you.
According to MHA (Mental Health of America) 2022, reports nearly 50 million Americans are currently combating some type of mental illness while, 3.6 million people in the state of Texas alone have been diagnosed with an emotional, mental or behavioral disorder.
Major Depressive Disorders is one of the most recurring disorders experienced by individuals, affecting more than 16 million people per year (MHA 2022). Just because, you have battled with depression, are battling with depression or experiencing a few symptoms doesn’t mean that you want to end your life. Suicide can become the outward manifestation of a pleasureless life if left untreated. Many people resist treatment because they believe they can “pray it away”, “drink it away”, “sex it away” and the most common one is ”fake it away.” Depression is not a garment that you can take on and off when you want to. Depression is serious, and if discarded to take care of itself, it will ultimately rob you of your peace, joy, love and healthy mindset.
Let’s look at what I like to call the 5R method to help you effectively walk through the dark valley of depression and make way into new lighted territory.
5R Method
R1: Re-evaluate
It is important daily to assess and reassess the highs and lows of our day. Taking time to investigate and evaluate daily what worked and what didn’t work, allows for planning and preparation of new changes to be instituted in our tomorrow. Failure to appropriately assess the day is planning to make the same decisions (not mistakes) tomorrow. A friend once told me the difference between a decision and a mistake, is simply that a mistake is unintentional, and a decision is intentional. Re-evaluating creates the gateway to renounce.
R2: Renounce
Everything starts in and with your mind first. I know this seems cliché but, it is so true. Our habits and behaviors are the outward extensions of our mindsets. Everything starts with your mind first; nothing has ever been created in life that wasn’t a thought first. Look around, no matter where you are right now, everything you see including yourself was a thought first. The mind is very powerful, it can send your body signals to orchestrate body movement, determine your emotions based on what or what has not happened, determine if you’re hungry or not…. all at the same time. If you refuse to change your mindset, you are unable to renounce negative thinking and behavioral patterns that keeps your life in a disturbing and toxic cycle. Renouncing old patterns, habits and behaviors that keeps you stuck will change the vibration of your life by allowing for new habits, patterns and behaviors to manifest. provides you with clarity on what has not been working and why, allows for you to see yourself contrary to the behaviors you have been displaying and begin to battle and war with the thoughts that enter your mind. Do not allow negative thoughts to take residency, for if they house themselves now, they will rule later. Negative thoughts start subtle and eventually becomes your internal bully.
R3: Reset
Think of hitting a big red buzzard!!!!! I know “It’s cliché” but, we all must reset our lives several times during this crazy journey. This is your “Do Over”, your “Start Over”, your “New Beginning”… You cannot have a reset without a refocus and reshift. When depression sets in, it obscures your vision, and your vision becomes blurry. For some of us, when our vision becomes blurry, we attempt to make the best of it and retrain our brains to see and focus as best as it can through blurriness instead of refocusing our vision through talk therapy or short-term counseling or coaching.
Reshifting relates to your positioning. When we become depressed, we tend to oversleep, overeat, over think and retreat from others. Sometimes we become the opposite, we under eat, under sleep and try our best not to think at all. Depression causes us to shift to a position and posture that’s not our “normal vibration.” Depression ushers us into a low frequency which causes a change in focus and shifts our position. Resets are mandatory and primary to up the vibration and frequency of our lives.
R4: Renew
Renewal happens daily…. A new mindset does not remain after a day just like going to the gym one time will not result in the loss of 40 pounds instantly. We must go to the gym multiple times a week, eat healthy daily, fight temptations to return to old eating habits and rid ourselves of negative thinking traps that coerce us to eat or drink unhealthy things. This is the same thing with our minds. We must renew it daily, feeding it positive things and when depression attempts to lure us back to bed, not answering the phone, overeating or not eating at all, overthinking, and all other self-defeating behaviors and tactics that keep us from being the best version of ourselves. Renewing your mind is a mental workout that must happen daily and often. Too many days away will have you with blurred vision and out of position once again.
R5: Repeat
This part is simple…. Do it again, and again, and again until it becomes a daily habit. These helpful tips will allow you to regain your vision and hope. Depression has impacted us all at one time or another but, it doesn’t have to be a part of our daily lives. Repeat these steps until your depression decreases and your insight increases. You can’t find hope in depression but, you can find hope in taking the necessary steps to progress forward.
